Once again, the Gulf Coast Music Association is pleased to sponsor the District Junior Festival.  Your child will be part of a festival that continues to attract about 400 young musicians from the Clear Lake area each year.  The festival will be held on March 4 and March 11, 2022 at University Baptist Church, Clear Lake.  Make-ups are allowed on the basis of 1) illness of student, (2) family emergencies, or a (3) required school event accompanied by either a doctor’s note or a note from the school sponsor.

This festival is not designed to be a competition.  Each entrant is rated according to his or her own individual level of advancement and on the results of a private audition before a qualified judge on festival day. Ratings and points are earned as follows:  Superior- 5 points; Excellent- 4 points; Very good- 3 points; Good- 2 points; Fair – 1 point.  All participants receive a certificate; Superior winners receive a special certificate and Superior + students receive a blue ribbon with their certificate.  When a student accumulates 15 points in a single category, he/she receives a Gold Cup.

Each entrant who earns a rating of Superior in this District Festival is eligible to compete for All-State Musician honors at the annual State Festival.  The festival is usually held in San Marcos in May.  More information will follow.

Every effort is made to provide a festival that is fair to all students. However, parents and students should be aware that nervousness, different acoustics and/or pianos, unfamiliar judges, illness, and other factors could affect the performance on festival day.  Careful preparation and attention to details in advance of the festival is the best insurance against disappointment.  We ask that parents wait in the designated waiting area to alleviate congestion and noise in the halls.  Monitors will come to the waiting area to call students by playing time or by name and will take them to the appropriate judging area.  Rating sheets will be distributed by the teacher at the lesson following the festival.

The rating given by the adjudicator is final and may not be questioned by the student, teacher, or parent.  If you have a complaint, please have your teacher submit it in writing to the Festival chairman no later than 3 days after the end of the festival.

Students MUST bring their music (no copies allowed) and 2 copies of duets (one for performers and one for judge) to the check-in desk on festival day.  Measures must be numbered.

Best wishes to your young performer,
